Panopto offers many functions, which we breakup into three workflows: Using Panopto with Blackboard, Using Panopto Separately From Blackboard, and Panopto for Students. This Roadmap is designed to help you determine which of Panopto’s workflows will suit you best and then link you to the appropriate posts that will give you the detailed instructions to start working with Panopto.
What is Panopto?
Panopto is the University of Pittsburgh’s secure video hosting and lecture capture recording platform. If you wish to record a lecture or provide a narration for a PowerPoint presentation or do a simple web cam recording to supplement your online course material, or if you have a video file that you wish to provide to your students and do not want to post it to a public site such as Youtube, Panopto can be used to record that video presentation, as well as deliver this video to your desired audience.
Panopto video presentations can be delivered through Blackboard CourseWeb, However, you are not obliged to use this Blackboard integration. Video presentations hosted on Panopto can be shared independently of Blackboard, either through viewer links, an embedded video, a podcast or even a SCORM package that can be emailed or posted on other websites.
Regardless of your choice above, Panopto video presentations are hosted on Pitt’s video website called My Pitt Video. You can directly upload video files that you have captured or downloaded on your computer or an SD card. However, Panopto offers a video creation tool as well, which can capture and combine web cam video, a PowerPoint presentation, and/or a screen recording. You can use any combination of these video streams using the Panopto Focus Recorder to capture and upload these recordings to the Panopto website.

If you have a Blackboard course, and want to deliver your videos to your enrolled students while restricting your videos to your students (not allowing people outside your course to view your videos), then you’ll want to use Panopto with Blackboard.
- The first thing you will need to do is connect your Blackboard Course with a folder in Panopto. This will involve creating a Panopto Tool Link in your course. To do this, you can follow the instructions on our Getting Started With Panopto page.
- Once you have connected your Blackboard course with a Panopto folder, you can begin Creating Videos in Panopto. This tutorial will go over the different methods of adding video content to Panopto, from using the Panopto Focus Recorder to directly uploading a video to creating additional sub-folders. Be sure to do this using the “Create” button in your Panopto Tool Link in your Blackboard course, or on the “Create” button on the Panopto website in the correct folder.
- Once you’ve created your videos, you can either manually add a Panopto video to your Blackboard course (recommended) or use the Panopto Tool Link as a video repository for your students to use (less preferable).
If you do not want to rely on Blackboard to deliver your Panopto video presentations, you can simply use the Panopto website as a hosting platform.
- We recommend creating a Sub-Folder within your personal Panopto folder for this purpose.
- If you have created a sub-folder, this will allow you to manually manage the Share settings. If you did not, you can adjust the share settings on your personal folder as well. You can set the folder to private, and restrict it to the viewers you want, or set the folder to a more accessible status to make it available to all Pitt users, or alternatively, to any user on the internet.
- Once you’ve set up your folders, you can begin Creating Videos in Panopto.
- Once you’ve created your videos, you can deliver your videos in a variety of ways. To learn more about how to deliver your videos, find your video’s Video Settings, and then navigate to Video Outputs. Again, be sure that your intended audience aligns with your Share settings, or your audience will not be able to view your videos.
Here’s how to allow your students to upload videos to Panopto.
- First, you must set up a folder for them to upload to. There are two ways to do this.
- If you wish for your students to upload into a shared space where they may collaborate and modify each others’ videos, then you can Create a Sub-Folder within your Provisioned Course Folder –OR- your personal Panopto folder. Then you must adjust the Share settings for this folder to include each of those students as Creators in that folder. If you have a large number of students, it is possible to add multiple users to the share settings at once, and you can download your student directory from either Blackboard or from PeopleSoft and copy/paste the student usernames all at once.
- If you wish for your students to upload their videos to you privately, where they cannot view or modify each other’s work, you must create a Drop Box folder. This can only be done using a folder connected to a Blackboard course, and this will apply only to students in your Blackboard course.
- Once you’ve set your students up as Creators, they should each have access to this folder, as well as a blue “Create” button when they log into the Panopto website through their “My Pitt Video Login.” Please direct your students to the Student Knowledge Base, and the Panopto Workflow for Students page to assist them with uploading content to Panopto.
Once you’ve created, uploaded and distributed your videos, or if you anticipate making video presentations a regular part of your course, and want to take the time to make your videos the best they can be, there are a few additional steps you can take.
